AMD Radeon RX 480 Review

Image
28nm GPUs stuck around for a good while – almost five years, in fact. Difficulties in shrinking beyond this level forced both AMD and Nvidia to improve performance and efficiency without the aid of a die shrink and Nvidia undoubtedly did a better job with its super efficient Maxwell architecture than AMD was able to with its refreshed Graphics Core Next products. Finally, however, the industry is moving on. Last month saw the introduction of the 16nm Pascal architecture from Nvidia with the release of the  GTX 1080  swiftly followed by the  GTX 1070 , and now AMD is here with its 14nm Polaris architecture and the first graphics card to use it: the Radeon RX 480.

Asus Maximus IX Formula Review

Image
While some ROG boards have been demoted somewhat to the ROG Strix range, the premium end of things in the die-hard ROG fold is still busy with boards. Two more have joined the fold - the Apex and Code, which add some flare in different departments as well as undercutting the Formula by a fair amount too. At the pinnacle, there's the Extreme, with its amazing water block and equally eye-popping price tag. So where does the Formula fit in? In short, the place it always has - in systems that will be water-cooled, tweaked, tuned, overclocked, and also demand a certain aesthetic prowess from their hardware too. The good news is that the new Formula delivers in droves, for the most part. The bad news is that you'll be paying over £300 for the privilege. There's a lot of plastic on show, but honestly, in person, the board looks fantastic. It has a chunky, weighty feel, and there's a feeling of integration from the water block through to the I/O shield, onboard buttons, and s...

NZXT Noctis 450 ROG Review

Image
Revealed at CES, the Noctis 450 ROG is a partnership between NZXT and Asus that adds a bit of ROG flair to an existing NZXT chassis design. This isn't the first time we've seen a collaboration between NZXT and a gaming brand, with Razer also having gotten in on the action with a special edition of the H440. The appeal of cases like this are limited by their very nature, but if you were already planning a ROG build it might do enough to pique your interest. The Asus ROG pricing premium applies to cases just as much as any other product, it would seem, as this version of the Noctis 450 retails for a whopping £60 more than the £120 original. So, what's going on that might possibly make this worth an extra 50 percent investment?
